Dear Parents,
It's time to close out the year. I want to "Thank you" for the opportunity to work with your child. I am sending home your child's Writing Journal on Wednesday, along with the report card and DVD of pictures of our class activities. As you look through the writing, you will see how your child has progressed from the beginning to the end of the school year.
Please send your child's backpack on Tuesday and Wednesday. I don't want anything to get lost.
If you would read to your child and have your child read to you, this will help your child when school begins in the fall. Also, have your child draw and write about his/her drawing, using correct letter formation, spacing, capitalization, and using a period.
Thank you for helping your child this year. I wish you and your family a wonderful and safe summer!
Sincerely Yours,
Mrs. Shortt

I am looking for their opinion, solving, spacing, capital letters at the beginning of each sentence, period at the end of each sentence.
Theme: Last week we talked about the life cycle of the frog. This week we are talking about animals we see in the ocean and learning facts of each one: octopus, seahorse, whale, lobster and others we will do next week. We are singing with the book, Down by the Sea.

Dear Parents,
Here are some reminders: Students wear tennis shoes today (Friday). May 2 Fine Arts Night-6:00-7:00 pm (See your child's art work and writing on the walls). May 2-Movie Night at 7 pm (Charlotte's Web)
Reading: We are using our strategies to figure out tricky words. We are learning to read fluently and comprehend what we are reading. They are retelling the story and telling what their favorite part of the story is. Also, what did the story remind them of when reading it. I'm having them to think of real life experiences or a book they have already read. (making connections). I want them to get more points in this area when I give the DRA (reading assessment test). I will be testing them on their reading level very soon. Work on the high frequency words I sent out, previously.
Writing: We have continued to work on persuasive writing. We have thought of problems we see at school, neighborhood, and now, world problems. We state the problem and give ways and reasons the problem should be fixed. The writing has been done through letters, emphasizing spacing, capitalization, periods, etc. I read I Wanna Iguana, where the child was writing to his mom, explaining his desire for an iguana and what he would do if he got it. I had the students write a letter to you, convincing you what they wanted or where they would like to go. They were to persuade you by reasons to convince you to do it. We are still working on them.
Math: We are on our unit of measurement. We had partners and traced each others shoes. Then we used cubes to measure them. We will use stricks to measure the lengths of adding machine tape. Please have your child count to 100 by tens & ones. Also practice writing to 20. I am beginning to test for the report cards. Show number cards for number recognition.
Theme: We have studied oviparous animals (animals coming from eggs), plants and their parts and what they need in order to grow, and this week we are learning about butterflies and their life cycle. Last week we planted marigold seeds and we are seeing them come up. The kids are excited about this! Today, I plan to have them use markers to decorate coffee filters to create their butterflies. Then we will put them in clothes pins to create the butterfly's body.
I want to thank you for helping your child in all the areas of school. Your time is not wasted.
Sincerely Yours,
Mrs. Shortt

Theme: We are talking about the farm and its animals. We are using books, such as Mrs. Wishy-Washy, Farmer Duck, The Little Red Hen, and Click Clack Moo. I've talked about different things we see in the book, such as quotation marks, bold print, facial expressions, etc.
The kids had a great time watching a movie while sitting in their box vehicle. Thank you for helping your child with this project! The vehicles were very creative! Here is a slideshow of their box cars and trucks. Those children who dressed up as a favorite storybook character are in the slideshow, too. Enjoy! Dear Parents,
Here are some reminders: Wear tennis shoes on Friday & Monday for P.E. Feb. 4 - Hat Day (bring canned food item); Feb. 13 - Valentine's Party at 2:45 (I will send a note on Friday & class names). Feb. 14 - STUDENTS DISMISSED AT 12:30. Feb. 17 - School in Session; Feb. 21 - Movie Night at 6pm
Valentine Party: Please send $2 for refreshments for the party. You can email our room mother, Elisabeth, [email protected] or phone her at 417-459-4270 if you can help with the party.
Reading: We are working on the "ug" word family and reading All Snug, which gives your child practice in reading these words. I also use a chart & CD to reinforce this skill. We are pressing ahead, reading as much as we can, utilizing the strategies we have learned to figure out tricky words.
Writing: We are still focusing on How-To Books, learning to label each step, writing in more detail, and having a picture to go with each step. We use a planning sheet to put our rough draft on. Then we edit our work, transferring the words/pictures to the book. I have some that can do this. We are still learning to capitalize the first letter of the sentence, space between words, stretch out words, and put a period at the end.
Math: Last week we worked on 2-D (flat shapes-rectangle, triangle, circle, square, hexagon) and 3-Dimensional shapes (cube, cylinder, cone, and sphere). Now, we are exploring how we can put those shapes together to make different shapes. We have used pattern block puzzles and a game called "Fill the Hexagons." We have learned how to use pattern blocks to fill a hexagon.
Theme: We are learning about the groundhog. Today, I read Gregory's Shadow by Don Freeman. Next Sunday is "Groundhog Day." We have predicted whether or not the groundhog will see his shadow.
Here is a How-To Writing we did as a class, "How to Make a Snowflake." We folded our paper by each step. Here is a slideshow of our snowflakes, hanging in the hall.

Dear Parents,
Here are some reminders: Fridays & Mondays-Have your child wear tennis shoes for P.E. Monday, Jan. 20th is our Snow Make Up Day (School is in session). Friday, Jan. 24-Movie Night starting at 6 pm
I hope all of you had a great Christmas break, along with the snow days! This is our first full week and we are still getting into the swing of things.
Reading: We are going full steam ahead, busily using our strategies to figure out tricky words and read fluently. Your child is learning to get his/her mouth ready to attack the next word that is read. I'm reminding them to look at the pictures for a clue as to what the word could be. Does the word make sense? Your child can reread the sentence as another strategy. Work on the word list to help your child become a better reader and writer. Thanks!
Writing: We are learning about "How-To Books." We used paper to plan "How to Line Up." I've modeled this, along with pictures to go with each step. Now we will transfer our words and pictures into our own books. After this, the children will think of a topic they would like to teach others, giving each step and drawing pictures to match the words. You can have your child think of something, such as "How to Make a Friend," "How to Get Dressed," How to Brush Your Teeth," How to Feed a Pet." These are just a few examples. I know your child can think of something and put steps to it. We have just started this.
Math: This week we are learning about 2-dimensional shapes (shapes that are flat). We learned about the circle, square, triangle, rectangle, and hexagon. The children gave me descriptions of each shape and they are written on chart pages. We have taken one shape, daily, and gone more into depth, finding shapes in real life. For more reinforcement the children have recorded information in their 2 Dimensional Shape Book. Next week I plan to introduce the 3 dimensional shapes (solid shapes- cone, cube, cylinder, sphere). We have songs and videos to go with the shapes. We are still counting to 100 by ones & tens and writing the numbers to 20. Please practice this at home.
Theme: We have been talking about "Winter & Snow." I've read The Hat and The Mitten by Jan Brett. We will compare and contrast these books. The children made a mitten, along with the animals. The Mitten will be read again and they can put their animals in the mitten for recall of story details. Have them tell you the story.
Thank you for the help you give your child. I can't do it alone! I need your help! Please have your child read and write at home for more practice. Thank you very much!
Sincerely Yours,
Mrs. Shortt

Dear Parents,
Here are some reminders: Dec. 20-All School Pajama Day; School is dismissed at 12:30; Dec. 23-Jan.3 is Christmas Break; School resumes on Jan.6
I want to thank you for sending in the $2 for our Class Party and all other donations, too. The party was a success! A big thanks goes to Elisabeth, our Homeroom Helper, and to those who helped with the party! The children had a great time.
There is a tendency for the children to forget what they have learned over the vacation. If you find that your child needs something to do, please have him/her practice writing their letters Aa through Pp or more, numbers to 20, counting to 100, writing stories (words need to match their pictures(s), counting objects to 20, adding and subtracting within the range of 5, practice reading to you, and you read to your child. You can also have your child cut & glue to help those fine motor muscles.
I'm wishing all of you a wonderful and safe Christmas Break! I appreciate you! Here are some pictures of our class party. If you don't have internet, go to the public library and use their computer. Here's the link: www.mrsshorttskindergartentigers.weebly.com

Dear Parents,
Here are some reminders: Movie Night at 6 pm; Wear school shirt on Tuesday; Dec. 19 Classroom Party at 2:45-3:20 (Please send in the $2 to cover expenses for refreshments, game materials, etc.); Dec. 20 All School Pajama Day & SCHOOL IS DISMISSED AT 12:30; Dec.23-Jan. 3 is Christmas Break.
Our party is this Thursday. Please email or call Elisabeth, our Homeroom Helper, if you can help with the party. Her email is [email protected] & phone # 417-459-4270. I know she can use your help. Please send in your $2 to pay for the refreshments and supplies. Thanks!
Reading: We have reviewed the "at" word family. I introduced "verbs" using the gingerbread book. We are continuing to use Daily 5 to work on reading & writing skills, while I assess your child on their reading level. Please continue to review the high frequency words on the sheet I sent home, previously. I have another set of words I will send home for those who are ready to read harder words. I am testing on the A list. The more words your child knows, the better reader & writer your child will become. Thanks for your help!
Writing: We have worked on the beginning, middle, and ending of a story. We have focused on writing how we felt at the end of the story. Example: I felt happy when I found my dog. Practice writing a beginning using these words: One sunny day..., One cold day..., One snowy day..., & etc. For the middle of a story use the transition word: Next, ... For the ending practice with your child in writing: Finally...After this they write how they felt. ex. Finally we found the dog. We were so happy! I will be testing this next week. I'm looking for "snap" words (high frequency words on the word wall) and words they stretch out that they will use in their story. They need to show what happened at the beginning, next, and then have an ending. Review spacing between their words and using a period at the end of the sentence. Use details in their pictures. Thanks for your help!
Math: We have worked on addition and subtraction word problems and knowing the difference. I will test next week on this. You can practice at home within the range of 5 (answer should not be above 5). On the test, your child will draw the pictures to figure out the answer. They need to circle the number to show the answer, after they have drawn their pictures. Some can do number sentences: ex. 4-2=2 or 2+3=5. I am teaching "Number Bonds." ex. What two numbers added together will equal the sum (answer). Ex. For 4, it could be: 1+3=4 or 4+0=4 or 2+2=4. Your child will need to write the two numbers.
Theme: We are reading different Gingerbread books. We will decide which one we like the best. We will taste a gingerbread cookie and write about it. This will be done next week.
Sincerely Yours,
Mrs. Shortt

Sincerely Yours,
Mrs. Shortt

First of all, I want to wish you and your family a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving! We have been working very hard to learn all we can.
Reading: We have worked with the "at" word family using a CD and our little book, In the Hat. We are reviewing the letters and their sounds. We are getting our mouths ready to read each word and remembering its sound. We are figuring out the tricky words by using the strategies we have learned. Please read over the Thanksgiving vacation with your child.
Writing: We have practiced rereading our writing pieces, along with suggestions and questions from our writing partners. We also have worked more on making a beginning of a story using words such as "One sunny day or One cold day, etc. Today we worked on the middle part of our story by using transition words such as "Next, Then, Suddenly." Please have your child write at home. The narrative writing test will be in December. Have them draw a picture and write words to match their picture. It should be a story showing characters, setting, details. What are the characters doing? What happened next? What is the ending of the story? Have them tell you the story and let them write the snap words (words on the word wall, which is the high frequency words you have been given). Stretch out other words by writing the letter of each sound they hear. Thanks for your help!
Math: We have worked with subtraction last week and will continue tomorrow. Make the flash cards within the range of 5. We are learning the difference between addition and subtraction with the songs we sing. We are acting out the word problems, too. Work on writing the numbers to 20, counting to 100 by ones and tens, and recognizing the numbers to 20 out of order. Thank you!
Theme: We have been talking about the first Thanksgiving and how the Indians helped the Pilgrims to hunt, plant corn, etc. We have written what we are thankful for and of course we have made a turkey out of our handprints.
Thanks for all of your help and again I wish you and your family a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving! School will resume on Monday, December 2.
Sincerely Yours,
Mrs. Shortt

Dear Parents,
Here are some reminders: Wear tennis shoes on Friday & Monday for P.E; School shirt on Tuesday; Movie Night this Friday, Nov. 15 at 6:30 (hosted by 4th grade); Nov. 27-29 NO SCHOOL (Thanksgiving Vacation)
Reading: We are using the different strategies to figure out "tricky" words. We are practicing retelling the story, including character names, problem, solution, beginning, middle, and ending. Keep working on the high frequency words. They need to know at least 10 words for this quarter. Have your child read to you to practice fluency.
Writing: We have worked with our writing partners to get more practice in stretching out words, spelling our "snap" words (word wall words) correctly, and making corrections on our writing pieces. I am continually emphasizing the need to use spaces between words, erasing neatly, and using a period at the end of a sentence. We are using our storytelling words to write our stories. Let your child practice drawing a true story, which includes himself/herself and other characters, what happened?, how did it end? Words need to match the pictures. (Beginning, middle, & end)
Math: We have been working on addition word problems. We have retold the problem, acted it out, and drawn it on paper. The students are learning to write a number sentence with the drawing. It is necessary for them to show their work (drawing the items, along with the number sentence with the answer) to get more points. Please have your child do simple word problems at home (within 5). We are learning to add addition facts, such as: 0 + 5=5, 1+3=4, 2+1=3, 3+2=5. All are within the 5 range. Get flash cards and do this at home. Next week, we will work on subtraction facts and subtraction word problems. Ex. 5-3=2, 5-5=0, 4-2=2, 4-3=1, 3-3=0, 2-0=2 and more. The addition & subtraction facts and word problems will be on the post test.
Theme: We learned facts about the bat and read Stellaluna. We made our bats and read bat facts.
Here is a photo of the students who got to eat with me because of having perfect behavior for the month of October.

You and I working together will cause your child to succeed. The Mastery Connect will allow you to view the growth of your child and you can view it anytime. I sent you the link several weeks ago.
The Fall Class Party is this Thursday at 2:45. If you would like to help, please call our Homeroom Helper at (417) 365-3529. I know you can help her at the party, too. Thank you!
Reading: We are learning our high frequency words so we will be smart readers and writers. Please work with these at home. I gave you a list at the conference. We are working well at the Daily 5 program, while I am working with the reading groups to instill reading strategies, and other skills, so your child may read fluently. We are learning to retell the story from the beginning to the end.
Writing: I am stressing the need to reread their stories. By doing so, they can fix their mistakes and make it more readable for themselves and others. We are learning to write a sentence(s). Some can do this, while others are still labeling their pictures. I have shown them checklists to help them make powerful stories. We will keep working on our narrative writing (true stories about ourselves, family, friends) and we will take a test in December. Please have your child draw and write a sentence at home. The more practice you give your child at home, the easier it will become to be a proficient writer. Thank you for your help!
Math: We have practiced writing our numbers and counting quantities for the number learned. This week we have learned about number 20. We are having practice in counting objects with games, such as "Build On." We are counting orally and writing the numbers in sequential order such as 10 __, __, __, __, 15. Please do this at home. Have your child write their numbers in sequential order from 1 to 20. Work with flashcards for them to have practice in recognizing the numerals. Thank you! I have only 15 minutes and I will try to show you your child's progress. Please be prompt. I will set the timer so I can stay on schedule, too. I look forward to our meeting.
Reading: I have been stressing strategies for attacking "tricky" words: rereading, using picture clues, and sounding out the word. We are learning our high frequency words. I wil give you a copy of more words at the conference. I have been assessing your child's reading level, in addition to reviewing the letters and sounds of the alphabet.
Writing: We have practiced stretching out the sounds we hear and writing them down. We know it is important to be able to read our writing and fixing it so others can read it, too. We are still working on narrative writing, which are true stories about our lives, friends, and relatives. The students know they should add details to their pictures to show the setting, characters, what they are doing, and what happened next. Not only do they do these things, they need words for their pictures. Have your child write at home for more practice.
Math: We are still working with counting objects and writing new numbers. This week we wrote 14, 15, and tomorrow it will be # 16. Please have your child practice writing the numbers to 16 and more. Also, please practice with your child on counting 12, 15, 18, etc. objects and matching the objects with the correct numeral on a card. Spread out the number cards, out of order. After your child counts the objects, he/she should find the correct numeral for the set he counted. Some are double counting, etc.
Social Studies: This week we have talked about the "Map & Globe." I read the book Me on the Map, which talks about a child creating maps of her house, bedroom, and neighborhood. It goes on with the U.S. state, etc. I let the children have the choice of making a map of their house, room, or neighborhood. These are hanging on the wall. We also, talked about our state and labeled the city and capital on the state of Missouri. Today, we talked about the globe and its features. We had practice coloring the land and oceans on paper. Then we labeled the map and glued "United States of America" on our country.
Sincerely Yours,
Mrs. Shortt
